How To Use Pen Tool, Pen Tool Photoshop Tutorials 05: Drawing Curves using Control Handles

Photoshop Tutorial for Beginners

How To Use Pen Tool Video Tutorial Outline

  1. Key to learning How To Use Pen Tool is Drawing a smooth flowing curved line: Click hold and drag to pull out control handles. Hold shift to constrain
  2. Drawing a curved line then changing direction: Click hold and drag to pull out control handles. Hold shift to constrain. To change direction, do not release the mouse button, press and hold ALT, drag mouse in the direction you want the path to continue (use the angle of previous Control Handles as a guide) release the mouse button first then ALT

00:00:01,920 –> 00:00:05,241
Welcome to PEN TOOL Photoshop. In this tutorial, we’ll cover drawing curves using control

2
00:00:05,241 –> 00:00:09,176
handles. The previous tutorials we were just placing anchors, creating a new path, selecting and

3
00:00:09,176 –> 00:00:13,354
dragging parts of the path. So they’re really beginner steps. This technically is a beginner area as

4
00:00:13,354 –> 00:00:17,271
well, but it becomes intermediate because working with control handles can be quite difficult. So

5
00:00:17,271 –> 00:00:21,177
this is pretty much essential that you would drag your control handles. Very rarely do you just

6
00:00:21,177 –> 00:00:25,523
click and click, click. You always drag out these control handles, normally, most shapes are rounded. So

7
00:00:25,523 –> 00:00:29,617
it’s a matter of clicking on part of a path and dragging. You see these control handles come out.

8
00:00:29,617 –> 00:00:32,412
So I’ve got no keyboard shortcuts held down. I just literally clicked with the mouse and dragged.

9
00:00:32,412 –> 00:00:36,130
So in this case, this is just an example of how to work with it. But if I hold down the shift key,

10
00:00:36,130 –> 00:00:41,255
it’ll constrain these control handles to a 45 degree line. So I click and drag and on this diagram I’ve

11
00:00:41,255 –> 00:00:45,400
got these pink control handles you can match. So I click where that anchor is and I click and

12
00:00:45,400 –> 00:00:46,801
drag.

13
00:00:46,801 –> 00:00:48,917
So you can see its creating this curve shape.

14
00:00:48,917 –> 00:00:54,215
And I’ll go into more detail about how to place and where to place these but for now just get

15
00:00:54,215 –> 00:00:58,133
comfortable with clicking and dragging these control handles out. And try to get comfortable

16
00:00:58,133 –> 00:01:02,043
with this pattern and how you’re putting an anchor down here and dragging the control handle

17
00:01:02,043 –> 00:01:05,601
out. So this point here you can sort of look at previous anchors and control handles and say okay,

18
00:01:05,601 –> 00:01:11,306
I’ll put a point here, click and drag. You can see it drags into place. That previous one was there

19
00:01:11,306 –> 00:01:13,927
so I think I’ll copy that, click and drag.

20
00:01:13,927 –> 00:01:21,244
Holding down the shift key. So you see this one here is not in line with that one so I can hold

21
00:01:21,244 –> 00:01:24,396
down the command key or I can just use the arrows like in the previous tutorial and nudge it up.

22
00:01:24,396 –> 00:01:37,162
Click and drag hold down the shift key. Use the arrow keys to nudge. Click and drag.

23
00:01:37,162 –> 00:01:43,776
So we created a smooth flowing line. I can save that as a path. The next option here is that’s

24
00:01:43,776 –> 00:01:48,275
continuous. The control handle going from one side to the other. So in this option, the example

25
00:01:48,275 –> 00:01:51,852
below where it changes direction so it goes up and then comes back down again so you can save that

26
00:01:51,852 –> 00:01:58,313
So we’ll create a new Path so in this case I’ll click there, It’s named Path 2. In this case I can click and drag

27
00:01:58,313 –> 00:02:07,264
hold down the shift key. Zoom in on this point. So I can click here and drag, hold down the shift key

28
00:02:07,264 –> 00:02:13,529
constrains it. So to change direction, I can now press the alt key or option (on mac) and that would change

29
00:02:13,529 –> 00:02:17,510
the direction. As I come back down I see its come back down now this way. See how that works?

30
00:02:17,510 –> 00:02:23,901
I’ll just show you an example here like that. If I was to let go it pops out the top path, comes out

31
00:02:23,901 –> 00:02:28,112
the top of there. So I hold down the option key or alt, click on that little circle, it now comes out

32
00:02:28,112 –> 00:02:35,447
that direction. So wherever that control handle is, that’s the direction it’ll come out of. So if I

33
00:02:35,447 –> 00:02:42,307
come back to here, hold down click and drag, hold down the shift key, click and drag, hold down

34
00:02:42,307 –> 00:02:47,762
the shift key. I happen to let go. Nothing selected now. Hold down the option key or alt. I can

35
00:02:47,762 –> 00:02:55,407
click and drag that down to place. Click and drag. The quicker way of doing it is click and drag

36
00:02:55,407 –> 00:02:57,957
hold down the shift key and then literally while I’ve still got the mouse button held down, so I

37
00:02:57,957 –> 00:03:03,540
haven’t let go of the mouse button, I’m now pressing alt or option and shift held down so you

38
00:03:03,540 –> 00:03:11,306
can constrain. Click and drag. Click and drag. Press alt. Drag down. Click and drag and then

39
00:03:11,306 –> 00:03:13,223
escape to end that path. Path one and two.

40
00:03:13,223 –> 00:03:16,582
So this tutorial, I would practice this over and over again a few times, really get comfortable with

41
00:03:16,582 –> 00:03:21,316
how this works, how the alt key works. The trick with the alt key, get used to clicking, holding,

42
00:03:21,316 –> 00:03:26,270
pressing alt and then let go of the mouse button. Always let go of the mouse button first. So that

43
00:03:26,270 –> 00:03:28,933
is drawing with curves and control handles. I’ll see you in the next tutorial.
